The ability of someone to re-grow their hair significantly will vary from person to person, depending on their age, whether they are male or female, the amount of hair loss, and the cause of the loss. There is an inherent tendency for hair to grow, as there is for a plant, providing the conditions are right. This means an adequate supply of all the necessary nutrients along with the absence of any adverse factors. The main adverse factor affecting hair growth is the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is produced naturally in the body but has a disruptive effect on some hair follicles if they are genetically so predisposed. This occurs much more frequently in men than women, and indeed is reckoned to be the most common cause of hair loss. Other adverse factors include frequent pulling out of hair (Trichotillomania) and severe emotional shock from loss of a loved one or a serious operation for example (Telogen effluvium).
The best formula for re-growth of hair depends rather on the cause of loss in the first place. If you are suffering from the common condition of male pattern baldness then you have a choice of two main types of treatment. The first is the drug finasteride, which is taken daily as a pill and helps to block the production of DHT and therefore diminishes hair loss and promotes growth. The second treatment available is minoxidil which is applied to the scalp as a lotion, gel or foam and seems to promote hair growth by stimulating scalp blood flow.
If your hair loss is due to other causes such as auto-immune, stress, shock, or physical abuse there may not be an adequate treatment that’s guaranteed to get hair growing again. It will attempt to grow again, and will do so in time provided conditions are suitable. One may have to just be patient and perhaps use cover-ups in the meantime if necessary. There are sophisticated systems now available, of hair extensions, together with mesh, that can effectively hide quite extensive hair loss. Moreover, these only need adjustment every few months and new hair can grow naturally underneath. Hair loss from stress related causes often reverses it self and new hair grows again spontaneously, whilst hair loss from autoimmune disease can sometimes be helped by steroids.
Many commercial products claim to be “the best hair growth formula” but can be likened to putting fertiliser on the lawn. They help to provide all the necessary nutrients but do not magically cause hair to grow. It is true that one’s hair is low down on the body’ list of priorities when it comes to distributing nutrients, which is why poor health can sometimes be reflected in dull, lifeless hair, but some of these products offer more ingredients than could possibly be needed, presumably to justify their cost. One such formula boasts 12 different vitamins and minerals, 18 different amino-acids, plus an array of a dozen or so herbal “enhancers”. This is impressive but one questions the need to take in different amino acids in this way, as it’s generally believed that provided the body gets sufficient protein of any kind it can break it down and re-arrange amino-acids to form new protein as required.
Growth of hair is a normal ongoing process unless something happens to deter it. There is not one formula for hair growth. It simply requires favourable conditions.
